Transderm Scop Uses

scopolamine is a prescription medication used to relieve nausea, vomiting, and dizziness associated with motion sickness. scopolamine is an anticholinergic medication. Anticholinergic medications have many effects in the body. For example, they decrease the secretion of fluids, slow the stomach and intestine, and dilate the pupils.

How Taken

scopolamine comes as a patch which is placed on the skin behind the ear. You apply one patch to a clean, dry, hairless area behind the ear. The scopolamine patch should be applied at least 4 hours before its effects will be needed. Each patch is good for 3 days. At the end of 3 days or when the scopolamine patch is no longer required, remove the patch and throw it away. Wrap the used patch in tissue or paper to avoid exposing anyone else to the remaining drug. Wash your hands and the area behind your ear thoroughly to remove any remaining traces of scopolamine from the area. If a new patch is required, place the fresh patch on the hairless area behind your other ear.

Warnings/Precautions

Before using scopolamine medication, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, an enlarged prostate, difficulty urinating, bladder problems, or glaucoma. scopolamine is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known if scopolamine will harm an unborn baby. Do not use scopolamine without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known if scopolamine passes into breast milk. Do not use scopolamine without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding. scopolamine is not recommended for use in children. Children are much more sensitive to the side effects of scopolamine.

Missed Dose

Remove the old patch as soon as you remember and apply a new scopolamine patch to the same area behind the other ear. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose altogether. Never take a double dose of scopolamine.

Possible Side Effects

Stop using scopolamine and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives). Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to use scopolamine and talk to your doctor if you experience drowsiness; dry mouth, nose, or throat; restlessness, excitation, nervousness, or insomnia; blurred vision; dizziness; decreased appetite, nausea, or vomiting; difficulty urinating; or an irregular or fast heartbeat. Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, headache, and poor coordination have been reported when treatment lasting more than 3 days is discontinued. If you use scopolamine for over 3 days, be aware that the side effects may occur when you stop. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Storage

scopolamine should be stored at a controlled room temperature between 20°C - 25°C (68°F - 77°F).

Overdose

In case of scopolamine overdose, seek emergency medical attention. Symptoms of an overdose of scopolamine include drowsiness, dizziness, agitation, excitability, seizures or convulsions, hallucinations, and death.
